Between 1956 and 1957 two huge lattice towers - one near Messina and one near Reggio di Calabria were built for the overhead powerline crossing of Messina Strait ( http://en.structurae.de/structures/d...fm?ID=s0012110 ). How tall are these towers? 200 metres or taller? What is the native name of these towers? Tore Faro, as I read once? A very interesting test was done with these towers when they were completed: one tested their oscillation behaviour by mounting three rockets with a thrust of 9800 kilonewtons and ignited them! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pylons_of_Messina ). If someone has pictures about this action, he should post them! Nowadays these towers are not in use as pylons any more. When were the conductors dismantled? Has someone pictures of the pylons with conductors? Has someone pictures of the anchor towers following these pylons on which the conductors were fixed? What is their nowadays use? (I suppose as telecommunication tower) Which radio services are transmitted from them? Is or was it planned to transform them in observation towers? If someone knows more about the history of these towers, he should write it here, if possible in English language Pylon on the site of Sicilia Pylon on the Calabrian site> |
